The work is a collection of clinical observations, cases of illness, and practical medical experiences. Reil used this work to document and disseminate knowledge about various medical conditions, ranging from febrile illnesses to chronic indigestion. His work during this period laid the foundation for his later, more famous contributions to the understanding of brain anatomy (such as the insula Reili) and the development of psychotherapy.
