The Manchester Lunatic Hospital, founded in 1766 (initially in 1752), was one of the first mental health institutions in Britain, originally associated with the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Founded during a time when there were few such institutions in England (alongside Bethlem and St Luke's), it aimed to provide a more ‘liberal humanity’ approach compared to the abusive private ‘madhouses’ of the era. It moved to Cheadle in 1849, becoming the Cheadle Royal Hospital. It was distinct for its relatively humane approach to treatment at the time compared to other private institutions.
